Helixos Responds to Feedback for U.S. DOE Fusion Energy Public-Private Consortium Framework

The White House's “Bold Decadal Vision” aims to bring fusion pilot plants to the grid within a decade, a milestone that the fusion industry is fully committed to achieving.

To support this goal, the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science Fusion Energy Sciences program asked for input on a proposed Fusion Energy Public-Private Consortium Framework (PPCF).

This framework would be designed to amplify federal funding by fostering partnerships across government, private, and philanthropic sectors to accelerate fusion energy research, development, demonstration, and deployment.

At Helixos, we’ve responded to this call for input by emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to fusion energy commercialization, including:

  1. A big focus on community engagement: Building public trust through proactive communication and tailored Community Benefit Plans is critical to gain acceptance and support for fusion energy projects.

  2. Starting out with a balanced technology adoption & business strategy: Aligning technological developments with market needs and stakeholder interests is essential for successful commercialization when you are opening new markets and developing new viable business models.

  3. Bringing along the entire supply chain: Establishing resilient and qualified supply chains within the U.S. and allied countries will be key to scaling fusion energy and reducing investment risks.

  4. Always keeping partnerships and local interests in mind: The PPCF can stimulate regional innovation and job creation by leveraging local expertise and fostering collaborations with state, local, and international stakeholders.

  5. Support for building the workforce now: Building a skilled workforce through education and training programs is vital for the long-term success of the fusion industry. Engaging the next generation is particularly important to sustain future growth.

We believe that the PPCF, if properly implemented, will significantly advance the commercialization of fusion energy and contribute to the broader energy transition. We are eager to support these efforts and help realize the potential of fusion energy for a sustainable future.
